You are not balding. According to a recent “60 Minutes” report, you are simply “follically challenged.” Nature notwithstanding, hair abuse--abrasive shampoos, product buildup, rough handling, pollution, stress, lack of sleep and poor circulation--can weaken hair bulbs, follicles and shafts. Hair eventually breaks or falls out. Goodby bad-hair days; hello no-hair days. But several follically correct items are popping up to nurture the scalp. Redken, Aveda, Phytotherathrie and Kiehl’s Since 1851 make pre-shampoos, hair masks, dry scalp treatments, conditioners and pH-balanced shampoos. And salons such as J.F. Lazartigue or Aclime, both in Beverly Hills, do complete hair analyses. Then again, on page 29 of J. Crew’s Spring/Summer 1993 catalog, model Paul Baril makes follically challenged hair look positively trendy.
