All Babies, All the Time

Because most new mothers are hospitalized for only 24 hours and have little time to learn a few pointers about parenting, many hospitals are showing The Newborn Channel, a 24-hour commercial TV network provided at no cost to hospitals and their patients.

The Newborn Channel is a response to complaints from nurses that new mothers are discharged so quickly now there is no time to teach them how to breast-feed, bathe the baby and care for the umbilical cord wound.

“The Newborn Channel helps nurses and mothers use the little time they have together more effectively,” says Elizabeth Hale of The Newborn Channel. “New mothers go home more confident and better prepared.”

The segments are available in Spanish or English and include advice from the top child-care experts, including Drs. Penelope Leach and T. Berry Brazelton.

Southern California hospitals with the channel include: California Hospital Medical Center (Los Angeles), Kaiser Foundation Hospital (Bellflower); Long Beach Community Hospital; Long Beach Memorial Medical Center; Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian (Los Angeles); St. John’s Hospital-Health Center (Santa Monica); St. Joseph Hospital (Orange); UCLA Medical Center; Western Medical Center (Santa Ana) and Whittier Hospital Medical Center.
