Apple Appeals Another Tax Bite: Apple Computer U.S.A. is fighting an Internal Revenue Service bill for $290 million for tax years 1987 and 1988. A spokeswoman for the San Francisco-based company said Apple has filed an appeal in U.S. Tax Court disputing the accuracy of the claim, which reportedly involves dealings with offshore suppliers. In an earlier case, the IRS claims Apple avoided about $120 million in taxes from 1984 to 1986 by paying a foreign subsidiary high prices for goods, thus driving down taxable income. Binding arbitration of that dispute is scheduled for July.
