Evans Wins 33rd National Title

Janet Evans cruised to victory in the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle Sunday to capture her 33rd national title on the final day of competition in the National Swimming Championships.

Evans was timed in 16 minutes, 16.38 seconds in taking over third place on the career title list. Tracy Caulkins won 48 national titles and Johnny Weissmuller won 36.

In other women’s action Sunday, Olympian Jenny Thompson won the 50-meter freestyle in 25.72 seconds, and Kristine Quance won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:16.30.

In men’s action, Raimundas Mazuolis, of Lithuania, won the 50-meter freestyle in 22.57. Earlier in the day, Mazuolis posted a time of 22.26 in the qualifying heats, the fifth-best time ever in the event.

Chad Carvin of Irvine finished fourth in the 1,500 freestyle in 15:41.75. He also won the Robert J.H. Kiphuth Award for highest point total with 60.
