Right Start to Stop Making 2 Product Claims

The Federal Trade Commission has approved a settlement agreement with Right Start Inc. of Westlake Village, which sells children’s clothing and products through a mail-order catalogue.

Lenny Targon, Right Start’s chief executive, said the settlement involved no monetary penalties, and the company admitted no wrongdoing, but it did agree to stop making claims for two its products.

First, the company agreed to stop claiming in its catalogue that a foam travel tray for children’s toys was approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and was found safe for use in automobiles by children ages 18 months and older. In fact, the FTC said the tray had not been examined and approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Right Start also agreed to stop saying that an air-purifying device it sells significantly reduces the risk of bacterial infections and helps respiratory problems. The FTC said Right Start had no scientific substantiation for the claim.
