A Glendale man driving a truck on an early morning hunt for his stolen van found the missing vehicle--when it crashed into him as the alleged thief was trying to evade police.
The unusual accident occurred at 4:40 a.m. in Glendale as Danny Dewayne Brewer, 28, an Oklahoma state prison escapee, fled in a stolen Toyota van, Glendale Police Sgt. Lief Nicolaisen said.
The van was gone when Sirarpi Antablian, 32, who lives in the 1200 block of Western Avenue, awoke shortly after 3 a.m. to discover that her home had been broken into while she slept. The robber took $80 cash and the keys to the van from her purse, Nicolaisen said.
While Glendale police went to Antablian’s home, her husband, Robert, began searching for the van. Officers spotted the stolen vehicle on a nearby street and chased it at speeds of up to 70 m.p.h. before it rammed into Robert Antablian’s car at San Fernando Road and Allen Avenue. No one was hurt in the collision.
Brewer was arrested on suspicion of burglary, auto theft and evading arrest. Bail was set at $25,000.
