Share

The Child Abuse Council of Orange County will commemorate national Child Abuse Prevention Month with a variety of educational and fund-raising activities.

“Our goal is to have everyone in Orange County (understand) that children need to be protected,” said Barbara Oliver, director of the council. “We want to increase awareness and make child abuse an issue in the community.”

The council will hold its annual Community Advocacy Dinner at the Newport Beach Le Meridien Hotel on April 15. The dinner will honor people who have helped “stop the cycle of child abuse.” State Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach), Gov. Pete Wilson’s nominee for state superintendent of public instruction, will be honored as Child Advocate of the Year.

On April 25, the annual ‘Round Orange five-kilometer and 10-kilometer races will be held through the streets of Orange. Proceeds will benefit the Orangewood Children’s Foundation.

At a County Board of Supervisors meeting last week, the council distributed blue ribbons, which symbolize the need to prevent child abuse.

Special events designed to raise awareness of child abuse are scheduled at local schools and colleges.
