About 900 volunteers from around the world picked up hammers Monday to begin a Habitat for Humanity building blitz to provide 20 homes for needy families here by the end of the week.

Fitness guru Jane Fonda and former President Jimmy Carter were among those donning work aprons and carpenter’s belts.

Volunteers started hammering and sawing about 7:30 a.m., and two hours later they had already erected some house frames.

The building blitz is part of an effort to help this rural south Georgia community meet its goal of eliminating substandard housing by the year 2000. In addition, the 20th home built this week will be Habitat’s 20,000th home since the Christian housing ministry was founded in 1976.
