Wholesale Inventories, Sales Are Static: U.S. wholesale inventories and sales were unchanged in February, both hovering at record levels, the Commerce Department said. Inventories totaled a seasonally adjusted $210.239 billion during the month, while sales totaled $159.565 billion, according to the department’s Census Bureau. The report was generally in line with economists’ expectations. Compared to a year earlier, inventories increased 4.4% and sales advanced 6.6%. If inventories of unsold goods aren’t liquidated and sales start falling, businesses could be forced to cut production, close plants and lay off workers.
