An Oxnard man and his nephew were arrested in connection with the shooting of a teen-age boy at an Oxnard residence Wednesday after a melee erupted during a party, authorities said.

The injured 16-year-old, whose name was not released because of his age, was transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the hand, said Sgt. Timothy P. Combs of the Oxnard Police Department.

When officers arrived at the residence in the 600 block of West Hemlock Street about 2:20 p.m., party-goers pointed to a vehicle fleeing the scene and identified the occupants as the assailants, Combs said.

Taken into custody several block away were Jose Lopez, 33, and his nephew Matias Mejia Lopez, 24, both of Oxnard. Matias Lopez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and his uncle on suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm, Combs said.

Area residents showed police where the pair had allegedly thrown a gun from their vehicle a block away from where they were captured, he said.
