Murder Charges Filed in Lynwood Slaying

Share

A Lynwood man arrested this week in the shooting death of the husband of Lynwood Mayor Pro Tem Evelyn Wells has been charged with murder, district attorneys said Wednesday.

Samuel Baxter, 31, was charged with one count of murder and one count of being an ex-convict in possession of a gun, a charge stemming from a 1982 assault for which Baxter served time.

Baxter is accused of firing the shots that killed Donald Morris Friday night in front of Morris’ home. Days before, Morris had publicly accused his wife of having an affair with Lynwood City Manager Laurence H. Adams Jr., a charge they both deny.

Baxter did not enter a plea at his arraignment Wednesday afternoon. Instead, the hearing was postponed for two weeks at the request of Baxter’s court-appointed attorney, David Rice. Baxter remains in custody without bail.
