LOS ANGELES : Candelight Vigil Protests Killing of Man by Officers

Share

About 50 people gathered outside the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southeast station Thursday to protest the fatal shooting by officers this week of a neighborhood resident who allegedly opened fire on police.

Darrell Harts, 30, died Wednesday from multiple gunshots when officers shot him Monday outside a residence in the 100 block of East 93rd Street. Police, who are investigating the incident, said Harts refused to drop a weapon and began shooting toward the officers. Before the confrontation, police said, Harts had wounded a neighbor’s dog.

On Thursday, participants in the peaceful, hourlong candelight vigil and march called the shooting unjustified. Protesters, who chanted “Stop the Killing!” and other slogans, contended that police could have defused the situation without killing Harts.

“I’m very concerned about the killing of young, African-American men,” said the Rev. Monroe Woods Jr., minister at the Hays Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
