Tele-Communications Inc. Unveils Fiber-Optic Plan: The Denver-based cable TV giant will unveil plans today to spend $2 billion during the next four years to upgrade its cable system with fiber-optic technology. TCI hopes that the overhaul of its cable systems will be a major step toward bringing high-tech interactive TV services, combining various features of the television, telephone and home computer, to its more than 10 million subscribers across the country. This year, TCI will spend $750 million to install fiber-optic cable in 100 cities. It plans to overhaul cable systems in 200 more cities during the next four years. By 1996, TCI hopes that 90% of its customers will be served by fiber-optic cable.
