Microsoft and Compaq Form Alliance: Software giant Microsoft Corp. teamed up with PC maker Compaq Computer Corp. in a strategic alliance that aims to make personal computers as easy to use and as common as everyday household appliances. The wide-ranging accord, building on collaboration between the companies since Compaq entered the business in 1982, will target new generations of computers such as hand-held devices and ready-to-use “plug-and-play” hardware and software. “Our goal here is to turn the PC into an appliance,” said Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in announcing the partnership.
