A congressman in the 10th day of a fast against world hunger said Wednesday that he has lost 16 pounds but is encouraged by the response to his protest.

Rep. Tony P. Hall (D-Ohio) began the fast after the House voted to abolish the Select Committee on Hunger that he chaired. Three other select committees on aging, children and narcotics also were eliminated to save money.

“I am very encouraged by the attention that my fast has generated,” Hall said in a statement. “Students in dozens of colleges across the nation are fasting and holding rallies, national church leaders have united behind my effort and several events are planned starting today to keep hunger in the national spotlight.”

An aide said Hall had not decided when to end his fast.
