Baby Bells Call on Gore for Support: The nation’s local telephone companies told Vice President Al Gore they would spend $125 billion over the next seven years to build a grid of “information highways” covering the United States--provided Washington lets them into cable TV and other now-forbidden businesses. The pitch is the same the phone companies have been making for the last several years in an effort to break the regulatory chains they say keep them out of the fastest-growing segments of the telecommunications industry. Gore, long a champion of the new telecommunications networks, reportedly promised to keep “an open mind.”
