COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Full House for Spring Scrimmage
It’s the spring, not the fall, it’s Howard Jones Field, not the Coliseum, and it’s an intrasquad scrimmage, not a real game.
Nevertheless, today marks John Robinson’s first appearance as head coach on the USC sidelines in more than a decade. About 3,000 fans are expected to attend a sold-out scrimmage beginning at 11:30 a.m., marking the end of spring practice.
Dwight McFadden has emerged as the projected starter at tailback, with Rob Johnson at quarterback and either converted tailback Deon Strother or Michael Jones at fullback.
Converted quarterback Reggie Perry, a starter two seasons ago but a backup to Johnson last season, is listed as a possible starter at safety.
“We hit each other from the beginning of practice to the end,” Robinson said. “This is as physical as anything I’ve ever done.
“It was necessary for us to establish that we are going to try to win games physically. . . . The champion wins physically.”
