California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Hart Won’t Run for Senate or Schools Job

In a surprise announcement, Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara) said he will neither run for state superintendent of public instruction next year nor seek reelection to the state Senate. An unannounced contender for the nonpartisan school chief’s post, Hart had been considered a strong candidate for the position. He said that when his Senate term ends in 1994 “it will be time for me to move on to other pursuits.”
