A federal judge set an Oct. 12 trial date for Clayton R. Jackson, a prominent Sacramento lobbyist, and former state Sen. Paul B. Carpenter, who are accused of political corruption. Jackson has pleaded not guilty to charges of racketeering, mail fraud and money laundering included in an indictment issued in February by a federal grand jury. Carpenter, a former member of the State Board of Equalization, has pleaded not guilty to mail fraud, money laundering and obstruction of justice charges that were part of the same indictment. Judge Edward J. Garcia also scheduled a new trial for June 14 for Carpenter on four other felony counts of racketeering and extortion. A conviction on those charges was reversed by a federal appeals court, prompting the new trial.
