CBOT Spikes Comex Merger Offer: The Chicago Board of Trade withdrew its offer to merge with the New York Commodity Exchange after almost three months of negotiations. The talks had been on the rocks for weeks because Comex members said the CBOT was offering too little for the world’s largest precious metals exchange. Comex members had also demanded access to the Chicago exchange’s products, which include the lucrative Treasury bond contract.
