Sen. Dave Durenberger (R-Minn.) pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony charges that he abused his Senate expense account.

Two ex-associates also pleaded not guilty to related charges and the three asked a judge to move their trial to Minnesota.

U.S. District Judge Stanley Harris did not rule on the request but released the three men without bail after their arraignment.

Durenberger, the ninth sitting U.S. senator to be charged with a crime, said “not guilty,” after the charges were read to him by a clerk. The two charges each carry a possible five-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

Durenberger is charged with hiding his ownership in a Minneapolis condominium to get $3,800 in reimbursement from the Senate for living there.
