IRVINE : Air Station’s Future Is Topic of Forum

The public will have a chance to discuss the proposed closure of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station at a special forum tonight.

The event, sponsored by the Irvine Chamber of Commerce, is designed for residents to get questions answered and to express their views.

“We want to solicit as much public input as possible about this issue,” said Marge Grey, spokeswoman for the chamber. “We want to hear the points of view of residents and businesses.”

The forum will feature a panel discussion by Irvine City Manager Paul O. Brady Jr., Councilman William A. (Art) Bloomer, Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) and Maj. Gen. Drax Williams, the air station’s commanding officer.

After the discussion, the officials will field questions from the audience.

Irvine officials oppose the base closure and hope to persuade the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission to spare El Toro.

The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers at Irvine City Hall, 1 Civic Center Plaza.
