BURBANK : City Seeks Approval for Cleanup Piping

Share

The city of Burbank has applied to the Metropolitan Water District to build the piping needed to treat ground water contaminated by Lockheed Corp., officials said Wednesday.

“This is the first construction to get the program under way,” said Mike Young, assistant chief of operations with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The City Council voted Tuesday to apply for the funding, with construction expected to begin in December.

Lockheed agreed last year to build a treatment facility on a site at 2030 N. Hollywood Way to clean ground water for 20 years. Lockheed’s former Burbank production complex has been identified by state and federal officials as a major source of solvents polluting the ground water in Burbank, according to the U. S Environmental Protection Agency.

The pipeline will be built from a water district connection at Greg Avenue and Old San Fernando Road, Young said. Young did not have details on the length of the project or its cost. MWD’s costs would be reimbursed by the polluters.

About 12,000 gallons per minute are to be pumped from the ground and treated.

The EPA also ordered six other companies last year to contribute to the cleanup as responsible parties to the contamination by providing a separate water district supply line needed for the facility. They are Aeroquip Corp., Antonini Family Trusts, Crane Co., Janco Corp., Ocean Technology Inc. and Sargent Inc.
