Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Mark A. Kroeker, the San Fernando Valley’s top police official, is out of the running to become chief of police in San Diego.

Kroeker said Thursday that he was cut from the competition this week after making the list of 12 semifinalists. The field of candidates was originally 57.

Kroeker, 49, applied for the post after losing bids to become Los Angeles Police Department chief and assistant chief. He said Thursday that he was disappointed but still enjoys his job with the Los Angeles department, in which he has spent his 28-year career and supervises about 1,500 officers assigned to the Valley.
