Councilman James C. Hodge Jr. is the city’s new mayor.

The City Council voted unanimously to elect Hodge to the post for the second time in his council career. The council elects a new mayor from its ranks each year. Councilman James S. Woollacott was named mayor pro tem. Councilman Dick Richards was absent.

Hodge, 43, a dentist, has served on the council for seven years and was mayor in 1987-88.

Stopping the proposed extension of the Long Beach Freeway (710) is his top priority, Hodge said. He said he would like to work with transportation experts to find an alternative.

Revitalizing the area around the planned Metro Blue Line station on Mission Street is another goal, he said.
