Downtown Tower Among the Winners of Beauty Awards

The 801 Tower on South Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles is among a number of winners in the Los Angeles Business Council’s 23rd annual Beautification Awards competition.

Other winners were the L.A. Firemen’s Credit Union in Pasadena, the Kentucky Condominium Residences at 3944 Kentucky Drive in Los Angeles and three projects recognized as “Partners in Energy Efficiency” by the Southern California Gas Co.

Santa Ana Pines, the first affordable detached home project built in Watts in 50 years, and Ward Villas, a senior housing project on West Adams, received recognition, as did Hutton Development Co. in Santa Ana.

The council’s landmark award went to the 58-year-old Griffith Park Observatory.

Other honorees were the Chiat/Day building at 340 Main St. in Venice, the residence of Doug and Michel Knoll, the Electric ArtBlock in Venice, the low-income housing project Strathern Park, and the Chicasso store on 5th Street in Los Angeles.

Landscaping awards were given for the home of Charles and Sandra Siegal, the residential development of North Beverly Park, off Mulholland Drive in Beverly Hills, and the Automobile Club of Southern California on Figueroa Street. Metro Line projects were also recognized.

Among the judges were Paul Danna, Keating Jernigan Rottet; Herbert McLaughlin, Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz; Morris Newman, Progressive Architecture, L.A. bureau, and Richard Thomas, the L.A. Group.
