GLENDALE : Service Fees Increased for College Students

Share

Students attending Glendale Community College this fall will have to dig deeper into their wallets if they want their grades sent home, ID cards validated or official transcripts ordered.

Those are among the nearly $150 in increased student and service fees approved recently by college trustees. Most are one-time only, new student or optional expenses.

New fees range from refund requests to late registration for classes. Mandatory per-semester charges, such as student service, health and instructional materials fees, will hold steady.

College officials estimate that the increase could generate $200,000 in revenue to help buffet a potential $3-million shortfall in the 1993-94 school year.

“We aren’t trying to sock it to anybody,” said Gary W. Parker, dean of admissions and records.

Parker said other services, such as job placement and career counseling, remain free to students.

International students will take the hardest hits, paying a new $25 service fee per semester.

Those who apply to the college for the first time will also have to pay $50--twice as much as before.

Students did not object to the proposed increase in fees during last week’s trustees meeting.

“They’re probably slightly upset that there’s more fees they have to pay,” said Joy Hutcheson, Associated Student Body treasurer.

“(But) these costs are the actual costs that the school has to pay to do all that. . . . We’re trying to do what we can to help the college out.”
