MOSCOW : Post-Referendum
In Russia, much is now clearer, but nothing is really settled. Although Boris N. Yeltsin won a ringing show of voter confidence in last weekend’s referendum, many members of Russia’s conservative-dominated legislature intend to put their own spin on the tally when they convene today.
Russia’s president has yet to reveal how he intends to capitalize on the plebiscite’s results--and his enemies haven’t made their plans public either. Some lawmakers believe an emergency session of the Congress of People’s Deputies, which tried to impeach Yeltsin last month but failed, may be meeting inside the Kremlin before this week is out.
The only certain forecast as lovely spring weather settles over Moscow is for continued political strife.
