Peters Canyon Regional Park, the latest addition to the county’s recreational parks system, will open to the public Friday morning.

The 352-acre park spans the cities of Tustin and Orange and is home to numerous animals, fish and birds, including the California gnatcatcher.

The land encompasses coastal sage scrub, freshwater marsh, grassland habitats and two reservoirs, said Cristi Silverberg of the Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks Department.

“There’s a huge lake and birds flock to that; it attracts egrets, blue herons and more common” mallards, Silverberg said. “There’s also a few bobcats, deer and coyotes passing through the area, and there’s lots of possums, raccoons, rabbits and ground squirrels.”

The park, set up on land donated to the county by the Irvine Co. in 1992, also contains four hiking trails that are also suitable for horses and mountain bikes, Silverberg said.

Official ceremonies marking the park opening are to begin at 11 a.m. Speakers include County Supervisors Gaddi H. Vasquez and Thomas F. Riley, Orange Mayor Gene Beyer, Tustin Mayor Jim Potts and Irvine Co. representatives.

The park will be open daily from 7 a.m. to sunset.
