Lockheed Co. on Friday received a $231.9-million U.S. Air Force order for fighter aircraft destined for Turkey.

The company’s Fort Worth Co. unit, acquired last year from General Dynamics Corp., will deliver 34 F-16C and six F-16D jets by July, 1996. The planes will in turn be sold to Turkey under the Defense Department’s foreign military sales program.

The order also covers initial materials for future orders of the same number of F-16Cs and F-16Ds, which could double the number of both fighters eventually sent to Turkey.

The Turkish order is Calabasas-based Lockheed’s second F-16 sale this week. On Wednesday, the company was given a $205.1-million order for 71 F-16C/D planes that were pegged for Pakistan.

However, the Air Force amended Wednesday’s order to make clear that the aircraft won’t reach Pakistan. In a statement, the Air Force said it is “taking delivery of the aircraft and placing them in storage in the U.S.”

A spokesman said that action was necessary because Pakistan is on the U.S. government’s suspension list in regards to military sales. The planes will remain in storage until Pakistan is removed from that list, and Lockheed will receive the money.
