Catholic feminist theologian Elizabeth A. Johnson, author of “She Who Is: The Mystery of God in Feminist Theological Discourse,” has been awarded the 1993 Grawemeyer Award in Religion.

The Grawemeyer awards are given annually by the University of Louisville and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in the fields of religion, education, music and politics. The awards recognize ideas that can be applied on a practical level to improve society.

Johnson, an associate professor of theology at Fordham University in New York, was chosen on the basis of her book, published last year by Crossroad, which promotes the value of feminist theology and the use of feminine metaphors.

She is a member of the Catholic Theological Society of America and the Committee on Women in Church and Society, sponsored by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The Grawemeyer awards, each worth $150,000, were established in the 1980s by retired Louisville industrialist H. Charles Grawemeyer, a 1934 Louisville graduate who made his fortune in plastics.
