Beauty in Bratislava
It was with disbelief that I read Bratislava, Slovakia, described as looking “almost war-ravaged” by Stephen Williams (“Humming Along the Blue Danube,” April 18). But Williams makes the presumption from the shore of the city, and without stepping into it.
In fact, Bratislava is a beautiful city, rich in history, culture and art, often drawing some comparison to neighboring Vienna, a mere 40 miles away. Bratislava boasts an international music festival, a renowned university, a fine wine-producing region and splendid European architecture.
Bratislava is a yet unspoiled and undiscovered gem in the former Eastern Bloc, with wonderful opportunities for the traveler seeking the Europe of yesterday: warm-hearted people, wonderful shopping bargains, old city charm and history and great food.
