GM Puts Tank Safety Back in U.S. Court: General Motors Corp.’s refusal to recall 4.7 million pickup trucks could move GM and the government toward a replay of a four-year court battle from the 1980s. In the “X-car” case, GM refused a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall order over an alleged brake defect in millions of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick passenger cars. The government sued GM in 1984 and won the case in 1987, but GM prevailed on appeal in 1988.
