DAKAR : Testing the System

Share

In an important test of its multi-party electoral system, the west African nation of Senegal goes to the polls in parliamentary elections on Sunday, two months after controversial presidential elections.

President Abdou Diouf’s Parti Socialiste will be defending its hold on Parliament, where it occupies 107 of the 120 seats, against 18 opposition parties.

Diouf, who has been in power for 11 years, was declared the winner of presidential elections in February, with 58.4% of the vote. His opponents claimed Diouf’s party manipulated the electoral code in his favor.
