Intel, Microsoft Spearhead PC/Telephone Standard: Aiming to promote development of software programs that help manage telephone calls, Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. have jointly developed a set of technical specifications governing the connection between phones and PCs. A wide range of computer and telecommunications companies have endorsed the new standard, called Windows Telephony. The standard should make it easy for software writers to create programs that dial phone numbers from a database, set up conference calls, store voice messages in computer files, and otherwise use personal computers to route and manage telephone traffic.
