Compton : Officials Ask to Ban Activist from the City’s Offices
A Compton resident who attends most City Council meetings may find herself barred from city offices if several elected officials, who complain that she interrupts city business, have their way.
The issue arose after Lorraine Cervantes took her fourth turn at the podium during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. She advocated a new state prison, derided motels, asked that election posters be taken down and complained about disrespect from some city officials.
During her last speech, City Clerk Charles Davis lost his temper.
“I want to find a way to have this lady restricted from the city clerk’s office. She gets in the way and disturbs my staff when we are trying to serve the public,” Davis said.
Davis was immediately backed by Councilwoman Patricia A. Moore, who asked the city attorney to research whether Cervantes also could be barred from other city offices. Moore complained that Cervantes disrupts city business throughout the civic center. City Atty. Wesley Fenderson promised to research the matter.
Cervantes said Moore and Davis are attempting to trample on her civil rights.
