Governor Vetoes Maine’s 9th Bid for Gay Rights Law

AUGUSTA, Me. —
Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. vetoed a gay rights bill in what was Maine’s ninth failed attempt since 1976 to enact such a measure. “This bill just goes too far,” the Republican governor said Tuesday. It would have barred discrimination against homosexuals in housing, jobs, credit and public accommodations.
