31 Prisoners Killed in Sierra Leone Jail Cell
Thirty-one people were killed when fighting broke out in a packed Sierra Leone jail cell, a government spokesman said Thursday.
Lt. Karifa Kargbo said 30 of the 62 people crammed into the cell at a police station in the eastern town of Kenema were killed on the spot and one died later in the hospital.
“Pandemonium broke out, and by the time the police could get the cell open they found 30 dead and one unconscious,” Kargbo told reporters in Freetown.
The 62 prisoners were arrested over the ritual murder of a 17-month-old boy in a nearby town.
