Countywide : Search Is Extended for New Chancellor

Share

Saying that not enough qualified candidates have applied for the position, the Coast Community College District Board of Trustees voted this week to extend the search for a new chancellor.

The board began the search after Chancellor Alfred P. Fernandez in February announced plans to retire, effective Aug. 31. Fernandez has been the district chancellor since 1988.

John D. Renley, the district’s vice chancellor of human resources, said all current applicants are considered viable candidates.

Trustees on Wednesday directed Renley to develop a new timetable and guidelines for applications, which the board will consider May 19.

The Coast Community College District, the fourth-largest community college district in the nation, includes Coastline Community College, headquartered in Fountain Valley; Golden West College and KOCE-TV, both in Huntington Beach; and Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

The three colleges enroll more than 53,000 students each semester, and the district employs 2,600 full- and part-time faculty and staff.
