Hundreds of visually impaired and blind children from throughout the nation will take to the field today for the 21st annual Braille Olympics in Universal City.

The free event, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Braille Institute Youth Center, 3450 Cahuenga Blvd. West, features track and field events for youths between the ages of 6 and 19, all of whom are visually impaired.

Anita Wright, program coordinator for the center, said the event, which is open to the public, will draw youngsters from as far away as Maryland and Texas.

“It builds self-esteem and confidence,” she said.

A parade around the field will kick off the event, followed by competition in the 50- and 100-yard dashes, running long jump, standing long jump and an obstacle course. Each contestant will receive a trophy and T-shirt.

The event, which Wright said is “the largest event of its kind in this area,” is being co-sponsored by the center and about 25 Optimist clubs.

Free parking is available at Hanna-Barbera Studios, one block east of the center.
