The Pentagon will cut back or end operations at 46 additional sites overseas in its 11th round of worldwide reductions, the Defense Department announced Friday.

The changes--brought on by the overall cutback in Defense Department operations because of budget pressures and the end of the Cold War--affect 22 sites in Germany, 10 in South Korea, 10 in the United Kingdom, three in Italy and one in Morocco.

The changes will mean transfers or job cuts for about 6,100 military, 770 U.S. civilian and 865 local positions, the Pentagon said. Among the largest sites affected are U.S. Air Force facilities at RAF Alconbury in England and the U.S. Army facilities at Taukkunen Barracks in Germany, which are to be partially returned to local governments.
