Maria Tolstoy, 85, a poet, professor and granddaughter of novelist Leo Tolstoy. Ms. Tolstoy fled her native Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution when she was 17. She settled in Czechoslovakia but fled to America in 1939 to escape the Nazis. She became known for her Russian poetry on the solitude of the emigre, and after her arrival in the United States assisted Soviet and German emigrants in publishing political material. She worked for Radio Liberty and the Army during World War II. Ms. Tolstoy taught Russian at Cornell, Columbia and Indiana universities, the University of Michigan and Hunter College.
