Cockburn and Cults

Share

Alexander Cockburn too easily slips from fact to fiction when he compares the tragic situation in Waco to the Salem witch hunts and Nazi Germany (Column Left, April 27). He makes comparisons that have no basis in fact and in so doing, draws attention away from any reasoned discussion of the threat posed by the Davidians and other destructive cults. At issue in many similar situations around our country is not only justice under the law, but compassion for the individuals involved. Cockburn’s fiery condemnation allows us to forget the true threats inherent in destructive cults: physical and psychological danger to the adults and children involved; danger from arms stockpiled, often in contradiction to American law.

The Commission on Cults and Missionaries of the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles works with individuals and their families who have fallen victim to the insidious work of cults. Our primary concern is for the welfare of the individuals involved. Unlike Cockburn, we don’t falsely accuse or cast insinuations. Our concern is the conduct, not the belief systems of these groups. We pursue our work with compassion and care--exactly what those in this situation deserve.
