Services Today for Assessor Sanford
Funeral services will be held today for Ventura County assessor R. J. (Jerry) Sanford, who died Thursday after suffering a stroke.
The services will begin at 10 a.m. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road in Ventura. The burial will be held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura.
Following the services, a reception will be held with Sanford’s family members at Ventura’s Masonic Temple, 482 E. Santa Clara Road.
County officials said Sanford had been stricken Wednesday evening while at his home in Oak View. He was taken to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, where he died Thursday morning. He was 57.
Sanford joined county government 31 years ago, starting in 1962 as an appraiser trainee. He quickly worked his way up through the ranks. He had been serving his second four-year term as assessor, responsible for determining the value of properties in the county.
The Board of Supervisors must decide whether to appoint someone to complete Sanford’s term, which expires in January, or call for a special election.
