Worst Season for UCLA Women Ends With Loss to Arizona State
UCLA’s worst women’s tennis season ended Thursday with a 5-1 loss to Arizona State in the second round of the NCAA championships at Gainesville, Fla.
The No. 11-seeded Bruins faced the No. 6 Sun Devils (15-9) without their No. 1 player, Keri Phebus, who missed the match on doctor’s orders because of a viral infection. Phebus is ranked ninth nationally, the highest ranked freshman.
The Bruins concluded the season 8-14, their first losing season since women’s tennis became a varsity sport at the school in 1976.

USC is seeded first for the second consecutive year and UCLA is second in the NCAA men’s championships, which begin today at Athens, Ga.
Both the Trojans and Bruins have first-round byes. Pepperdine faces Florida in a first-round match today.
