Heavier Fabric Can Hide a Man’s Peek-a-Boo Lines

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

See-through slacks: How can you tell it’s spring without a calendar? Of course, trees begin to leaf, flowers bloom and guys you always thought were neatly dressed come to work with the outline of their shirts visible through their slacks.

“This can be a problem if you wear slacks made with a lightweight fabric,” says Terry Barber of Polo Ralph Lauren in South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa. “The thicker the fabric, the less likely you are to see an outline of the shirt.”

The see-through problem can even get to the point where the pattern of a guy’s underwear is visible to the world. To prevent it, he should make sure his pants are properly fitted, because the tighter they are the more likely they’re going to show. And he should stay away from cotton poplin slacks for the office; they’re too casual anyway.

Tummy tuck: It’s an age-old problem for any woman with a skirt. You leave the restroom and head back to the office and hear snickers. You feel a tightness around your waistband and realize your mistake. You’ve tucked your blouse into your pantyhose and pulled the band over your skirt.

“It’s a mistake everyone makes at some point,” says clothing designer Carol Steele of Newport Beach. “There’s no trick to it, you just have to look in the mirror behind you in the restroom to check if you’re tucked in correctly.”

Make sure your blouse is evenly inserted into the skirt, so it doesn’t look bunched up in back. And try to push it down evenly so it’s flat on your backside and doesn’t create rolls that could be seen as padding around your waist.

The back flip: It’s no crime to have a little hair loss, but some of the ways to hide it should be outlawed.

Probably the most notorious method of hiding baldness, short of a toupee, is to allow the hair to grow long in front (or back), comb it over the empty spot and keep it in place with a huge dose of hair spray. But by doing this, you may be doing just what you were trying to avoid.

“When people see a man with his hair unnaturally combed, they wonder what he’s hiding,” says hair stylist Jason Green of Lake Forest. “You don’t have to hide a bald spot to make it less noticeable.”

To avoid calling attention to your thinning hair, you may need to get a better haircut. Hair that’s cut to fall naturally will make a face look better, which will draw attention away from the scalp.
