VENTURA : Lawmaker Plans Trip to Capital for Constituents

Assemblyman Jack O’Connell on Friday announced that he is planning a field trip for his constituents.

O’Connell (D-Carpinteria) is arranging for charter buses next month to take 35th District residents to Sacramento on a three-day trip to learn about the state Legislature.

“Many times people tell me they feel disengaged and confused from the legislative process,” O’Connell, a member of speaker Willie Brown’s inner circle, said in Ventura.

The event June 27 through June 29 will not be funded by any taxpayer dollars, O’Connell said. The bus will cost about $33 per person, “and you’re on your own for food and lodging,” he said.

The seminar includes a tour of the Capitol and viewing of a floor session. Panels will address lobbying the Legislature, press coverage of the Legislature, policy issues facing the Legislature and how a bill becomes law.

The trip will take place a week before the deadline for passing the state budget.

“Negotiations will be fast and furious,” O’Connell said. “It’s an opportunity to watch state government in action.”

People who are interested in joining O’Connell’s bus trip can call his office at 641-1500.
