Share

A 110-unit housing complex developed by the first economic development corporation in the nation formed by Latinas celebrates its grand opening Monday at 379 S. Loma Drive.

Casa Loma was developed by New Economics for Women, a nonprofit economic development corporation founded in 1985 by the Latina leadership organization Comision Femenil Mexicana Nacional Inc.

The complex is designed for low-income families and senior citizens. It will provide social services--including child-care, counseling and job-training programs--geared toward single-parent households, said Maggie Cervantes, executive director of New Economics for Women.

Counselors will also link residents with other social service programs throughout the city, Cervantes said.

The $18-million project was funded by city, state and private money. Residents move in next month. Information: (213) 937-5315.
