Pacers Fire Hill in Their First Change
The Indiana Pacers, unable to rise above the middle rank of the NBA, fired Coach Bob Hill on Tuesday and Pacer President Donnie Walsh said there would be other changes.
Hill, who took over when Dick Versace was fired in 1990, was the Pacers’ only coach with a winning record since the team joined the NBA in 1976. But elimination in the first round of the playoffs each of the past four years, including the last three under Hill, prompted the move.
“This is going to be the first change,” Walsh said. “I’m aware that it in and of itself will not be the answer to this team making a jump to the next level.”
Hill compiled a 113-108 record in two-plus seasons as Pacer coach. He previously coached the New York Knicks.
The Pacers, 41-41 during the regular season, lost their first-round Eastern Conference series to the Knicks, 3-1.
