American Airlines Begins Layoffs: American Airlines has laid off 412 mechanics and stock clerks in the first wave of job cuts that could affect as many as 2,000 employees by year’s end, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram newspaper said. The layoffs occurred at the airline’s maintenance facility in Tulsa, Okla., and at operations at Denver and San Jose. The paper said Ft. Worth-based American has not yet determined how many jobs will be cut, but that pilots, flight attendants and ground workers nationwide will go, in efforts to reverse $1.4 billion in losses since June, 1990.
